Occupational Therapy

Regain Independence in Your Daily Life

Occupational therapy evaluates and treats individuals whose ability to function independently is impaired or threatened by disease or injury. The main focus of occupational therapy is to regain the individual's highest functional level of independence.

Therapeutic procedures include exercises for strengthening, fine motor control, and range of motion. This may include neuromuscular reeducation, cognitive training, instruction in activities of daily living and the use of assistive devices, and splinting, and the application of physical agents to relieve pain.

Our areas of expertise include:

  • Neurological Rehabilitation (stroke, brain injuries, etc.)
  • Orthopedic Rehabilitation (arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Hand and Upper Extremity Therapy
  • Pool Therapy
  • Pediatrics - Developmental Delays
  • Training in Adaptive Devices
  • Cognitive Training
  • Lymphedema Rehabilitation

How Can Occupational Therapy Help Me?

Those who have functional limitations or changes in their ability to take care of themselves often benefit from occupational therapy. Patients who benefit include those who need help with things such as putting on shoes and socks, relearning how to eat after a stroke, or improving strength after an injury accident. Your occupational therapist will perform an evaluation to test your joint motion, muscle strength, and motor coordination. By making this assessment, your therapist can gauge how these factors have impaired your ability to perform your daily living activities such as dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, and eating.

Treatment plans involve your doctor’s recommendations for occupational therapy, which may include:

  • Learning how to use adaptive equipment
  • Daily self-care skill development (such as practicing personal hygiene, like brushing your teeth, bathing, using the toilet, and more)
  • Therapeutic exercises and activities

Our experienced occupational therapists are ready to meet your rehabilitation needs. The hours for our Rehabilitative Services Department are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Contact us at 775.782.1519 for further information about occupational therapy in Gardnerville.
