Carson Valley Health Announces June 2023 DAISY Nursing Award Winner

CVH staff and patients gathered in June to hear the announcement of the summer DAISY Award winner for Extraordinary Nursing.

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is presented at hospitals internationally to nurses who have been nominated for going above and beyond for patients and their families. A caveat of the award is the winner is kept a secret until the award recognition event, so they learn about their award in front of and at the same time everyone else does.

On June 12th, Victoria Gatt, RN was one of many who gathered to hear the DAISY award announcement with the intent of congratulating one of her fellow nurses. As someone who has been nominated before, but not won, Victoria is well aware of the honor of a DAISY Award. It wasn’t until her manager led her to the front that she realized she was selected as the winner.

Victoria Gatt, a humble and dedicated 37-year nursing veteran, was nominated by a grateful patient who said, “the reason Victoria stands out is because everything, and I mean everything, she said she was going to do or was doing, she held strong to her word. This means everything to a patient.”

When asked about winning this award, Ms. Gatt, genuinely shocked, said, “I didn’t expect this. I do all I can for each and every one of my patients. It is very heartwarming to receive this award and recognition for my work as a nurse. Thank you to the patient who took the time to see that and turn in a nomination for me. They saw the compassion I have for them.”

Nominations for the DAISY Award are encouraged year-round, and winners are chosen by a committee in the winter and spring. Patients, families, and colleagues are all encouraged to nominate nurses who exemplify compassionate care beyond their call of service. Founded in 1999, The DAISY Foundation was formed by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from a complex medical condition after eight weeks in hospital care, where he received “kindness and compassion every day” from the nursing staff, according to the foundation’s website, https://daisyfoundation.org/daisy-award.
