CVH Cares for Women with Discounted Women’s Health Screenings

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages women to increase their physical activity, eat a more healthy and balanced diet, and focus on their mental health. Making these simple daily health decisions is an impactful way to improve your health over time.

The CDC also recommends that you talk to your primary care provider to schedule a check-up. Carson Valley Health (CVH) supports the CDC’s mission by recommending the following women’s health screenings.

Dexa Bone Density Scan

After menopause, your risk of osteoporosis increases as your estrogen levels decrease. In addition to getting enough calcium and Vitamin D, you may need additional medical care to preserve your bone density. The Dexa Bone Density Scan is an affordable, non-invasive way to check whether osteoporosis may be affecting your bones.

Before the test begins, you’ll lie down on a special X-Ray table. A technician will help you position your body correctly using foam blocks. As the Dexa machine passes over your body, two x-ray beams will gather data about your bones and translate it into pictures and graphs. A radiologist will review the results and send a copy of them to your primary healthcare provider.

Blood Tests

The following blood tests are included in CVH’s discounted Women’s Health Screening Package because they can help your doctor identify certain health conditions that are common in women.

Lipid Panel

This blood test measures how much cholesterol and other fats (lipids) are in your blood. If the amount of fats in your blood is high, you may be at risk for heart (cardiovascular) disease.

A1C Diabetes Screening

An A1C diabetes screening shows the average levels of sugar (glucose) in your blood over the last three months. If these levels are elevated, you may have diabetes. It’s important to identify and treat diabetes as early as possible, because it increases your risk of heart disease. Women with diabetes are also at higher risk than men for complications, such as depression, kidney disease, blindness, and high blood pressure.

Vitamin D Evaluation

This test shows how much Vitamin D is in your blood. Women who have low Vitamin D levels are at a higher risk for chronic disease, heart disease, cancer, inflammation, and autoimmune disease. Low Vitamin D during pregnancy has been linked to pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and other pregnancy complications.

Thyroid Blood Tests

Women are more likely than men to have thyroid disease, especially after pregnancy and menopause. There are two types of blood tests to help your doctor determine how healthy your thyroid is.

TSH Screening

A thyroid regulation or TSH screening test shows how much thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is in your blood. TSH is secreted by your thyroid gland and is important for regulating your muscle strength, mood, energy, metabolism and temperature.

Free T4 Screening

Thyroxine, also known as T4, is secreted by your thyroid gland into your bloodstream. This hormone supports your muscle, heart, brain, and digestive systems. Two little or too much T4 can be a sign of thyroid disease.

Arterial Disease Screening (ABI) Test

To do this noninvasive test, a doctor will place blood pressure cuffs on your arms and ankles and use a small ultrasound machine to check your blood flow. This special type of blood pressure reading screens for peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which affects more women than men over the age of 40. PAD is a narrowing or blockage of the arteries that send blood to your arms and legs and can increase your risk for heart attack and stroke.
