CVH Honors Men’s Health Month with FREE Men’s Health Screenings

As Father’s Day quickly approaches, families all over the country are gearing up to celebrate the men in their lives. Besides being the perfect time to celebrate the father figures in your life, June is also Men’s Health Month. Why not make preventive healthcare for all men a part of your festivities?

Men often face health challenges alone. Their health challenges tend to go unnoticed and untreated until complications are severe. Sometimes, men feel anxiety about getting bad health news, so they avoid healthcare altogether. Experts also believe that sociocultural expectations and macho media depictions of men contribute to men being less likely than women to be proactive about healthcare.

Whatever the cause, 40% of men avoid routine health checkups, only visiting their doctors once they’re in the throes of a serious health issue.

Men’s Health Month is intended to raise awareness about preventable men’s health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of common health conditions experienced by men. Carson Valley Health (CVH) is supporting the cause by offering FREE men’s health screenings throughout the month of June.

Lab Tests for Men’s Health

While few men enjoy going to the doctor, even fewer enjoy the stick of a blood draw. However, certain blood tests can help your doctor identify and treat health conditions before they become more serious.

A1C Diabetes Screening

An A1C diabetes blood test measures how much sugar (glucose) has been in your blood over the last three months. If the results are raised, then it’s possible that you have or are at risk for diabetes.

Men are more likely to get type 2 diabetes at a lower weight than women tend to get the disease. This may be because men tend to store fat in their bellies, which is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for men in the United States. In addition, men with diabetes are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction, which is treatable in most cases.

Vitamin D Evaluation

This blood test shows how much Vitamin D is in your blood. In recent years, Vitamin D has been the focus of many research studies. Not only has Vitamin D been proven essential for healthy bone and muscle function, but some studies also suggest that Vitamin D is helpful for maintaining a healthy testosterone level.

Lipid Panel

A lipid panel is a blood test that checks how much cholesterol and other fats (lipids) are in your blood. Having high levels of fats in your blood can put you at increased risk for heart disease and heart attack. Your health may be at risk, even if you have no symptoms, so it’s important to monitor your lipid levels regularly.

PSA Prostate Evaluation

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein that’s produced by tissues in your prostate. A raised PSA level can indicate inflammation, enlargement, or even cancer of the prostate. Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men. Fortunately, prostate cancer can be treated and cured if its discovered in the early stages.
