In the inaugural year of the Claire Bauer Heart of a Volunteer Award, Gardnerville resident Marjorie (Margie) Runyon received the honors. With over 8 years and 1,600 hours volunteered at Carson Valley Health (CVH), she says her time there allows her to connect with people and make a difference. “I think I can read people when they walk in that door -- if they're worried, if they're upset -- where they're coming from. You just know, and then you know how to greet them."

In addition to her time at CVH, Runyon has also volunteered for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Patrol since 2003.

Claire and Peter Bauer’s children created the Claire Bauer Heart of a Volunteer Award upon their mother’s unexpected passing in February of 2016.  Claire had been a long-time volunteer at Carson Valley Health, as well as the Douglas County School District. She and Peter moved to the Carson Valley following his military retirement, and quickly became engrained in the community. Claire was known for her flair for life and her endless giving of her time and talents.  The family wanted to carry on their mother’s legacy by recognizing others who give of their time, talents, and heart to the patients and visitors at CVH.

“Our mom [Claire] had a heart for helping others when they needed a hand, for making people smile when they were having bad day, and for being grateful every day for God’s blessings,” says daughter Cheryl Symonds. “Volunteering is such an important way to give back, and it’s just our way of saying thank you, from her, and from all of us. It is our hope that others will continue to be inspired by her legacy.”
