CVH and Douglas Pop Warner Continue Tradition

GARDNERVILLE, NV. (June 18, 2014) – Carson Valley Health and the Douglas Pop Warner Football and Cheer Club joined forces to offer free sports physicals to the youth enrolled in the 2014 Pop Warner season.
Over 65 local youth attended the screening on June 9th at Carson Valley Health’s new facility on Ironwood Drive. With volunteer contributions from CVH medical providers, staff, and Pop Warner Board Members, the athletes who participated received vital statistics and full physicals at no charge. It took the efforts of 16 volunteers and five medical professionals to filter the youth through this year’s event.
Douglas Pop Warner President Jim Valentine expressed gratitude for the medical professionals and volunteers that make the event happen. “Dr. David H. Johnson started this tradition over 20 years ago. We are lucky to have local professionals who have stepped up to keep it going.” Valentine added, “Medical exams are costly, and without the donation of time and facilities, parents would have an additional expense in getting their athlete on the field. We want everyone to have the opportunity to play.”
In accordance with National Pop Warner requirements, all Football and Cheer participants are required to obtain a full health release signed by a Licensed State Examiner for each season of play. Valentine explains that sports physicals are not intended to be a financial barrier to a child who wants to play. “Physicals are a national requirement, and have proven their value many times over the years by finding ailments previously unknown to the athlete and his or her parents.”
Carson Valley Health’s Ironwood Drive facility opened in March of this year, and includes Occupational Health Services, Dr. Herbig’s Family Medical Clinic, and CVH’s Urgent Care – for illness or injury that needs immediate attention, but may not be a lifethreatening emergency.
