We know recovery can be hard, but with the team from Carson Valley Health Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy Center at your side, you are never alone in your journey.

Physical Therapy requires strength, endurance, hard work, and the determination to recover from a surgery or injury. It takes time and patience to get back to where you were before your procedure, and our staff is here to guide you through every step of the way.

Get Back to Where You Started

Mary is an energetic, enthusiastic 81-year-old from Arizona who settled in the Carson Valley in 2005. She is extremely active and enjoys life outdoors. Mary can be found working on trails and backpacking with her friends. If you bumped into her today on the trail, you would have no idea that Mary recently underwent two knee replacement surgeries.

Mary said her doctor was shocked when she told him it was time to fix her knee because she needed to do a 100-mile backpacking trip.

“I said, ‘No, I’m not kidding with you’,” she laughed. “And so, he fixed it and I did my trip last summer.”

With another big trip on the horizon this year, Mary said she was ready to have the other knee fixed.

“The knee [he fixed] was just perfect for last summer,” Mary said. “So, he did the other one, and now this summer, we’re going to do it all over again.”

Mary finished treatment with Carson Valley Health Rehabilitation Services in early March with hard work and dedication to get back to the life she wanted to live. This summer, she will be hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail for a second time.

Knowing what it takes to strengthen and heal your body after surgery, Mary says if you don’t put in the work to help yourself, you’ll never fully recover from your injury.

Kelli at Carson Valley Health customized her treatment plan using creative ways to achieve Mary’s goal of getting back outside and hiking through the woods. She even created a mini “river” for Mary to walk through at the center, using equipment to mimic walking over logs and rocks through streams to simulate the terrain she would encounter on her hikes.

“She built this thing every week in the middle of the floor, and it was my log in my river and my steppingstones,” Mary said. “And when I did the backpacking trip last summer in the high country at Yosemite, of course, there were streams and there were logs and stuff, and [I kept thinking] that’s what I did in PT.”

Mary’s unwavering positivity and motivation got her through physical therapy and back to her lifestyle better than before she had surgery, she said.

“Just be happy [for] crying out loud!” Mary said. “I've never made a friend by being grumpy. I've never made a friend by being nasty. I've never made a friend by being in a bad mood. But I've made a lot of friends by smiling.”
